Duo brings hope of immune restoration

Part of a special section on AIDS research. Brigitte Autran and Christine Katlama lead one of France's most successful AIDS research collaborations. Over the past 12 months, the researchers, who work at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris, have published a series of papers showing that the damaged immune systems of HIV-infected patients may recover, at least partially, if powerful combinations of drugs are used to reduce viral load. Although AIDS researchers are still debating the level of recovery that takes place, most agree that Autran and Katlama's findings have helped to open the door to this significant possibility.
