Potential sources of blood sample contamination with Mn prior to Mn analysis were examined. Containers, syringes, needles, anticoagulants and between laboratory transportation in an ice chest at 4 degrees C for 5 h were examined as potential sample contamination sources. Cleaning containers in deionized water significantly decreased Mn contamination. Plastic and Monovette syringes did not significantly contribute to sample Mn concentrations. 19-gauge needles contaminated samples slightly more than 23-gauge needles. Of the anticoagulants tested, EDTA but not heparinized and PE tubes caused sample contamination. This contamination increased with storage time. It is suggested that certain needles and anticoagulants may be the main sources of sample Mn contamination.
