Elevated serum lipase and amylase activities are the most common laboratory tests for pancreatitis. Next to pancreatic pathologies elevated pancreatic enzymes are associated with several other diseases. If no such association is found, an idiopathic form of pancreatic enzyme elevation can be diagnosed. For this entity no pancreatic pathologies have been found. In contrast to other diseases with elevated pancreatic enzymes, the idiopathic form needs neither further diagnostic management nor a regular follow-up.
