Pigs sent for slaughter are often cryptorchid, and the testis is left in situ as proof to the owner. It may appear normal, or small and soft, but several cases occurred where the testicle was engorged with blood owing to torsion of the spermatic cord and constriction of the spermatic veins. This may occur when the animal is hoisted vertically during slaughter, since the retained testicle usually has a long spermatic cord (20-25 cm) which is freely movable on a fold of peritoneum.
