"Chronic mania": review of literature and case reports

After having pointed out that the mania has been somewhat neglected by literature in the last few years, the authors say they are going to carry out a cathamnestic-statistic research, also in order to better show the problems of chronic diseases. The authors describe all clinical kinds of maniacal fits, together with their evolutions to chronicity. Besides they consider the phenomenologic aspect of maniacal crises as well as the so called "mixed psychoses". The meaning of chronic mania is clearly illustrated through nosography and symptomathology as wen as through abundant literature. Then the authors about their choice of 6 men and 2 women and give an accurate description of the course, symptomathology, language, deliriums, clinical characteristics and global deficit of the personality. Chronic. maniacs are then compared with hypomaniacs and hyperthymic psychopatics and the differences in structure are shown. Finally the authors show that chronic mania, though not frequent, is actually a clinic reality and is likely to improve and reach clinic recovery provided that the diagnosis be correct. As to the relatively pure cases, the authors do not accept the concept of "mixed psychoses" which may well be applied to different pathologic structures.
