Pairing of Leucochloridiomorpha constantiae metacercariae or adults (2 separate sets of experiments)was studied in the bursa Fabricii of young chicks, on the chick chorioallantois, and in vitro at 37.5 degrees C inagar cultures with an overlay of Locke's solution.Worm pairing occurred from 0.5 hour to 8 days after inoculation. The in vitro and chorioallantoicexperiments suggest that pairing is worm-mediatedand independent of factors associated with thebursa; chemical attractants rather than thigmotaxismay be involved. After transectipn, anterior-halfworms paired more successfully with whole wormsin vitro than did posterior-half worms; this suggeststhat factors associated with pairing are mostly in theanterior region.
