Gastrointestinal mucormycosis--an uncommon isolated mucormycosis

The clinico-pathological features of gastrointestinal zygomycosis are reviewed in 8 patients (5 premature infants, a 12-year-old boy and 2 adults) from India, who were diagnosed during 1992-97. Clinical symptoms included vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal lump and abdominal distention. All the neonates presented with intestinal perforation. The duration of symptoms was <=10 days in 6 cases. Zygomycosis was not suspected clinically in any patient. In 6 cases the diagnosis was established antemortem from resection or biopsy material. Only 2 patients received antifungal therapy (amphotericin B) and only 1 patient responded.
