Mucormycosis among patients on dialysis

Reports in the literature of 24 cases of phycomycosis, usually due to Rhizopus sp., in patients on dialysis and the fact that 21 of these patients were receiving deferoxamine for treatment of aluminium or iron overload are discussed. It is reported that an international registry of cases of mucormycosis developing during long-term dialysis has been established in the hope of identifying the risk factors responsible.
