Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (MCC) of isolated from cow udders was tested in rabbit mammary-glands for its ability to cause mastitis. The mammary glands of 5 rabbits were infected by injecting 0.5 ml culture media containing about 106 cfu of the bacteria into each teat. MCC was reisolated from the mammary glands and infected glands showed gross lesions of inflammation and petechial haemorrhage of the teat, and histopathological changes suggestive of mastitis. Rabbit mammary-gland is recommended as a potential in vivo experimental laboratory model to screen the mastitogenic potential of mycoplasmas isolated from udders.
