In this issue, geneticists Stephen O'Brien and Cheryl Winkler of the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland, and colleagues report that HIV-infected patients who have a mutation in a gene for the chemokine SDF-1 progress far more slowly to full-blown AIDS or death than people with the normal gene. The findings may provide fresh clues to why HIV takes so long to destroy the immune system and help in the development of therapies that could slow or halt the progression of the disease.
