Of 1315 trauma patients, 556 (43%) were tested for HIV seropositivity in a rural trauma centre in Pennsylvania, USA. Two of the 566 patients (0.35%) were HIV positive. Because of the low incidence the cost effectiveness of studies of this kind is questionable.
