There is evidence to suggest that cd T cells play an important role in the body's immune system. These cells, although relatively few in number, may be the first line of defense against invading pathogens, particularly those trying to invade the body through mucosal surfaces such as the lining of the gut. They also seem to be able to deal with the broad range of antigens they are likely to encounter at mucosal surfaces. Moreover, cd cells may be able to work without needing to be activated by the same complex series of steps required by ab cells, the classic T cells that circulate around the body. The writer describes the growing body of research that indicates the importance of cd T cells.
