The effects of aqueous alcoholic extracts of Matricaria chamomilla [Chamomilla recutita], Foeniculum vulgare and Plantago psyllium [Plantago sp.] (50-800 mg/kg) on CCl4-induced liver injury were studied in mice in experiments lasting 5 days. Animals receiving M. chamomilla or F. vulgare extracts at 400 mg/kg p.o., 1 h after CCl4 administration, showed reduced serum aminotransferase activities, liver weight, and hexobarbital sodium-induced sleeping time. Hepatic cell regeneration was increased and liver injury decreased. P. psyllium at 100 mg/kg, but not at the other doses, showed hepatoprotection.
