In this issue, S. S. Campbell and P. J. Murphy report that the circadian clock of humans can be entrained by light application to the area at the back of the knees, the popliteal region. The results show that popliteal illumination with a visible-spectrum light source can change human circadian rhythms without any transduction of light through the eye. This is consistent with, but does not prove, the theory that blood carries chronobiological photoreceptors.
