Idiopathic tetanus in fattening cattle

In April, an 11-month-old Limousin cross heifer calf from a group of 11 housed in a modern, purpose built, cement floored shed since December was identified as a case of tetanus. Bedding was on soft wheat straw and the diet consisted of high quality hay, concentrates, sugar beet pulp nuts and minerals. Examination of the other calves identified 2 less severe cases of tetanus and inappetance of the whole group. Standard tetanus treatment of the group and administration of an antibiotic and clostridial vaccination of neighbouring groups of cattle was instigated but 2 died and 3 more required trocharisation (including one from a neighbouring group).
