Modified human intrauterine contraceptive devices were surgically implanted in nine multiparous females of the Oregon troop of Japanese macaques to investigate whether endocrine and behavioral mechanisms are involved in the timing of the sharply defined mating season. Failure to conceive increased the duration of the females' mating season unless the female had had a recent infant. In this case, the presence of an infant had an inhibiting effect on the duration of the mother's mating season and nullified the differences between pregnant and nonpregnant females.
