To be joined as partners in protein synthesis, ribosomes and mRNAs must be presented to one another in the ritual of translation initiation. Recent data from several laboratories have indicated that a long-known translation initiation factor--eIF4G (formerly p220 or eIF-4c) is a crucial link between mRNAs and the small ribosomal 40S subunits during the initial engagement process. The writer discusses the translation initiation process in detail.
