Two distinct mechanisms that account for the CD28 antiviral effect were identified: a trans effect , whereby CD28 induces enhanced secretion by CD4 and CD8 cells of antiviral soluble factors, including C-C chemokines; and a cis effect, whereby CD28 stimulation induces an intrinsic state of resistance of CD4 cells to infection with HIV-1. The trans effect is not specific for CD28, as other costimulatory receptors can substitute. In contrast, the cis effect appears to be specific to CD28 ligation.
