Some 20% of the adult population suffer from high blood pressure, the great majority having essential hypertension, that is, elevated blood pressure for which no specific cause can be found. Only about 5% of hypertensives present with secondary hypertension, that is, they have a specific, often treatable disease of which raised blood pressure is one, frequently the leading symptom. The renovascular disease is responsible for roughly one half of these cases.
