Reversible renal failure during treatment with captopril and diuretics [chlorthalidone, furosemide, hydralazine and spironolactone] was found in 4 patients with bilateral renal artery stenosis and 1 patient with renal artery stenosis in a solitary kidney. In 3 patients renal failure developed only after diuretics were added to captopril. Diuretic treatment may therefore trigger the development of renal failure during captopril treatment in patients with bilateral renal artery stenosis or renal artery stenosis in a solitary kidney.
