This study examined whether differences in diet may explain the presence of idiopathic hypercalciuria (IH) and also examined whether a Ca-restricted diet, often recommended for the treatment of IH, is nutritionally appropriate. Dietary intake and mineral and electrolyte urinary excretion were studied twice in 10 children (4-14 years old) diagnosed with IH and in 9 controls: firstly while eating an uncontrolled diet; and secondly, after a week of restricting the intake of milk and milk products. Energy intake and protein, carbohydrate, fat and mineral intakes were similar in IH patients and controls. Withdrawal of milk products from the diet resulted in an important reduction in the intakes of Ca (71.1%), P (63.5%) and fats (30.1%), although only Ca intake was significantly below international recommendations (33.6+or-10.4%). It was concluded that the natural diet of this group of hypercalciuric children did not differ from that of control children and that suppression of milk and milk products created a nutritionally inappropriate diet.
