In the Obstetric Division of the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York since January, 1953 contraceptive advice has been routinely offered to the patients at the time of their 6 weeks postpartum examination. A total of 2046 women accepted one of the following methods diaphragm with jelly, cream or gel; gel or cream alone with applicator; or a new vaginal insert. A table presents the months of use and pregnancy rates for each method, and the data indicate that the simpler methods used without mechanical barriers can be safely recommended. Advice concerning child spacing should be an integral part of the first postpartum visit.
