The in vitro effect of triclabendazole on the integument of Schistosoma mansoni was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Two different concentrations of drug were used (15 micro g/ml and 75 micro g/ml) and the worms examined after different exposure times (1, 3 and 24 h). Exposure of S. mansoni to triclabendazole at both concentrations resulted in the rapid destruction of the integument, parasite contraction and immobilization within 1 h, and 100% mortality after 24 h. The extent of the ultrastructural changes was proportional to drug concentration and exposure time.
