Feeding habits of a sample of children under 20 months of age in Madrid

The mothers of 344 infants (3-19 months old) who attended 2 vaccination centres of the Regional Health Authorities of Madrid, Spain were interviewed using the dietary history method supplemented with questions on milk feeding and weaning. The sample was stratified into 3 socioeconomic groups, low, middle and high, each group comprising about a third of the sample. In general, children were fed according to pediatric recommendations. Deviations from the recommendations occurred when beast-feeding was stopped too early and complementary feeding was introduced too early. The mothers' awareness of gluten was somewhat lacking and they also did not know which products contained it. It was concluded that the children were fed in a similar manner regardless of socioeconomic group.
