Alanine aminotransferase activity in mammary tissue, muscle and liver of dam rat during lactation and weaning

Alanine aminotransferase (AAT) activity was investigated in the liver, mammary gland and skeletal muscle of virgin, lactating (12-14 days postpartum) and weaning dam (24 h after the removal of pups at days 12-14 postpartum) rats. The liver was the principal tissue involved in alanine transamination. AAT activity decreased in skeletal muscle during lactation. AAT activity was increased in the mammary glands of lactating and weaning dam rats compared with the activity in virgin rats. It was suggested that during lactation the mammary gland becomes an important extra-hepatic site of alanine metabolism.
