All over the United States, teaching hospitals are preparing to streamline, downsize, and forge alliances with old competitors in an effort to cut costs. This reorganization of academic medicine is being fueled by the demand from health care financing systems that academic health centers achieve the efficiency of nonresearch hospitals. The proposed merger of University of California, San Francisco, and Stanford University, which is expected in 1997, is just one of a number of actual and potential teaching hospital mergers in the pipeline. The aim is to combine the medical services of the two institutions under an independent administration while keeping the teaching functions separate. By reorganizing, the schools are hoping to check operating expenses, including salaries.
