Trends in population education in Africa South of the Sahara

The aim of this paper is to present a summary of population education activities in sub-Saharan Africa since 1975, and also to provide background information on certain pertinent influences which have shaped those activities. The article offers: (1) a definition and goals of population education; (2) a review of African governments' perceptions of their population issues and problems as well as their position in those matters; and (3) some illustration of country-specific population education and other related activities in the African region. By emphasizing 'activities' rather than 'trends' the point is made that population education in sub-Saharan Africa is yet too nascent or youthful to establish trends.
