Drawing on data from the Sri Lanka Fertility Survey of 1975, the author investigates the influence of various socioeconomic factors on age at first marriage. Expanded education is shown to have contributed more to the rise in age at marriage of Sri Lankan women than any other socioeconomic factors studied, including ethnicity, religion, place of residence in childhood, and premarital work experience. The study also indicates that later age at marriage has played a crucial role in lowering fertility.
