A letter replies to an article by Baron et al. in a previous issue (1995;269:E709-15) that examined the effects of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition on insulin resistance. The writers agree with Baron et al. that NOS inhibition has no effect on insulin-stimulated glycogen synthesis in soleus muscles, but they point out that they and other have demonstrated either the repressive effects of NOS inhibition or the stimulatory effects of NO generation on 2-deoxyglucose transport in other muscles and cells, respectively. A reply is published.
