Genetic control of lactate dehydrogenase synthesis in the somatic and gametic tissues of pigeons

The total complement of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) isozymes in the somatic and gametic tissues of the pigeon is related to the activity of genes at 3 loci: LDHA, LDHB and LDHC. A survey of LDH isozymes patterns in homogenates of heart from approx. 2500 wild pigeons revealed 6 phenotypes. Breeding experiments showed that these polymorphic forms are due to 3 alleles at the LDHB locus, B1, B2 and B3, the frequencies of the genotypes B1/B1, B1/B2, B2/B2, B1/B3, B2/B3 and B3/B3 being 0.649. 0.049, 0.002, 0.269, 0.005 and 0.026 resp.
