Scanning electron microscopy studies of peritoneal catheter in CAPD peritonitis due to Aspergillus fumigatus

A case is reported in a 53-yr-old woman from the Korea Republic, who was receiving continual ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and who developed fever, diffuse abdominal pain and cloudy effluent. Numerous colonies were visible on the surface of the Tenckhoff peritoneal catheter, which were studied in detail by SEM. Samples of dialysate grew A. fumigatus. The catheter was removed immediately and symptoms resolved after treatment with intravenous fluconazole.
