Reliable indices of lung function are now possible in infants using tidal breath analyses and measurements of maximum flows using the rapid thoracic compression technique. These have allowed better definition of the pathogenesis of wheezing illnesses in this age group which should, in the future, lead to improved treatment and possible prevention of common lower respiratory illnesses.
