Haemolytic anaemia in an embryo transfer calf

One of 6 calves produced from implantation of imported frozen Holstein embryos into Longhorn/Friesian cross heifers was presented at 2 weeks old with persistent pyrexia, dullness and joint pain. The signs continued despite therapy. Examination of blood samples taken from the affected bull calf and another in the same batch identified a haemolytic anaemia in the sick calf. Iso immune haemolytic anaemia due to intake of colostrum from the recipient heifer was provisionally diagnosed and confirmed using a crude cross matching test which showed agglutination when recipient serum and calf blood cells were mixed. The calf recovered after a blood transfusion.
