FDA approval has been granted to cefepime hydrochloride, a fourth generation cephalosporin antibiotic, for parenteral treatment of urinary tract infection, skin infection, and moderate to severe pneumonia caused by the susceptible organisms Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter, or Klebsiella pneumoniae. The antibacterial drug is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb under the trade name Maxipime. A table compares the dosages and costs of some parenteral antibiotics.
