In the Dudinka district of Krasnoyarsk in the transpolar tundra, where insecticides have never been used for mosquito control, the effectiveness of dichlorvos (DDVF), fenthion (Baytex) and malathion (carbophos) was compared in the laboratory with that of DDT against adults of Aedes by mean of five-minute exposures in accordance with the WHO method. The species most abundantly represented in the tests was A. hexodontus Dyar, the others being A. punctor (Kby.), A. communis (Deg.), and A. pionips Dyar. All the organophosphate insecticides proved more toxic than DDT, the LD90 values being 0.00098 g/m2 for dichlorvos, 0.028 g/m2 for fenthion, 0.38 g/m2 for malathion and 0.76 g/m2 for DDT. The rate of increase of deaths with increasing dosage of insecticide was slightly lower with dichlorvos than with the remainder, and was highest with DDT. The angle of inclination of the regression line was 0.87 for dichlorvos, 1.37 for malathion, 1.56 for fenthion and 1.9 for DDT.
