A laboratory study revealed that feeding females of Schistocerca gregaria with olive leaves resulted in the cessation of vitellogenesis. The vitellogenins were not synthesised by the fat body in the haemolymph. The vitellogenin inhibition was induced by a blocking of the juvenile hormone JH III synthesis by the corpora allata. The corpora allata of olive-fed females synthesised 10 times less JH III than those from females fed on alfalfa.
