Hypothalamic lesions were induced in five pigs by electrolytic cauterization following stereotaxic surgery. Lesions in the lateral area of the hypothalamus (3 animals) resulted in complete aphagia and adipsia without impairment of the muscular reflexes involved in chewing and swallowing.
