Korean institute ponders role in global eradication efforts

A new International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in Korea is aiming to expand the list of existing vaccines to meet the public health needs of the developing world. The South Korean government has promised up to $50 million to build and equip a facility for 40 to 50 researchers and also to pay 30 percent of the estimated $15 million a year in operating costs. The success of IVI will, however, depend on making optimum use of a slim budget and avoiding duplication of existing vaccine development efforts. Construction of IVI, which will have an overall staff of 200, is expected to be finished in late 1999.
