In vitro susceptibilities of field isolates of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine in Mpumalanga

A modified version of the World Health Organization in vitro drug sensitivity test was applied to 27 Plasmodium falciparum-positive blood samples taken during routine diagnosis in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Of these, 6 isolates failed to mature to schizogony within 24 h, 3 isolates were found to have a minimum inhibitory concentration for chloroquine of 0.16 micro M and were considered to be sensitive to the drug by WHO criteria, and 18 isolates were resistant. The prevalence of chloroquine resistance in this sample was 86%.
