Changes in interleukin 4 (IL-4) levels in the sera of 25 allergic rhinitis patients from the Nagoya area, Japan, were monitored during immunotherapy and compared against sera from 20 healthy adult volunteers. All the patients were allergic to house dust. Assays of serum IL-4 were performed using the chemiluminescence sandwich enzyme immunoassay (for antibody to mite [Dermatophagoides] antigens) using AMPPD(3-(2'-spirodamantane)-4-methoxy-4-(3"-phosphoryloxy) phenyl-1,2-dioxetane). Pre-treatment levels of IL-4 in patients were significantly higher than in the control group. Immunotherapy reduced the IL-4 in sera from pre-treatment levels in 17 cases (68%). Levels remained unchanged in 3 cases and increased in 2 cases. The s-CD23 levels of patients, assayed at the same time, were also significantly decreased by immunotherapy in 17 cases.
