Safety data accumulated from clinical trials in chemotherapy-induced emesis and postoperative nausea and vomiting and post-marketing experience confirm that ondansetron is well tolerated. In particular, it appears to lack sedative, respiratory, cardiovascular or dystonic side-effects. Constipation, headache, transient increases in transaminases, hypersensitivity reactions, and blurred vision are the only assodated adverse events. Furthermore, the incidence of these adverse events is much lower in patients given ondansetron for the treatment of postoperative sequelae compared to patients with chemotherapy-induced emesis. In summary, ondansetron has an excellent side-effect profile for the prevention and treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting. It is unlikely to interact with other medicines and has not been shown to affect vital signs or interfere with postoperative recovery.
