New experiments underscore warnings on maternal drinking

Findings announced at the Research Society on Alcoholism and the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism Joint Scientific Meeting in Washington, D.C., on June 22-27 underscore warnings about maternal drinking. New research, conducted mainly on rat neurons, has revealed that even moderate maternal drinking can bring about molecular changes in the fetal brain that influence its ability to learn and remember as an adult. Some of the research presented at the meeting is briefly reviewed.
