Companies investing heavily in developmental biology hope to use novel approaches to treat disease, but they face many commercial and scientific pitfalls. Developmental genetics involves the use of model organisms and the regenerative power of the embryo in an effort to revolutionize drug discovery. Several firms have recently established themselves in the U.S. and have made some significant discoveries. If they are to mature into commercially successful companies, however, they must overcome a maze of scientific and financial obstacles, including capital gain, patenting regulations, marketing, and research failure.
