Unthriftiness, hairy fleece, and tremors in newborn lambs

These symptoms developed in 2-4% of newborn lambs on two ranches in northern California. Most affected lambs were the offspring of yearling ewes. Pathological changes consisted of hairy fleece with abnormal pigmentation, lymphoid hyperplasia, hypomyelinogenesis, and mild meningoencephalitis. The clinical syndrome in some respects resembled 'border disease' in lambs of England, and the 'hairy shaker' disease of lambs described in New Zealand.
