April 26, 1996, is the tenth anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine. This event left a very large footprint on the nuclear power industry and on public perceptions of nuclear energy around the world. To mark the anniversary, Environment asked some distinguished scholars to reflect on the implications and legacy of the accident. Articles discuss the physiological effects of the disaster, the environmental and medical consequences of Chernobyl, and the efforts to improve the safety of operating reactors and to design safer and more reliable facilities for the future.
