137Cs and 40K were measured in fifty six soil samples from northern Greece, sampled in November 1986. 137Cs values in soil ranged from 290 to 7670 Bq/kg and 40K from 226 to 1604 Bq/kg. 137Cs was inversely proportional to 40K values in soil. It is suggested that the wide variation in 137Cs values in soil indicates that 137Cs remained associated with incompletely weathered fallout particles. The highest 40K values were probably associated with K fertilizers. From analyses of local vegetation samples, the ratio of 137Cs in grass to 137Cs in soil ranged from 0.02 to 0.2, and the ratio of 137Cs in tree leaves to 137Cs in soil from 0.01 to 0.02.
