The symposium "Prooxidant Effects of Antioxidant Vitamins" was held as part of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Nutrition convened in Atlanta, Georgia, from April 9 to 13, 1995. The papers presented discussed oxidant-antioxidant status alterations in cancer patients, the benefits and liabilities of vitamin A and carotenoids, vitamin C-dirven free radical generation from iron, and the dual roles of nutrients as antioxidants and prooxidants, with reference to their effects on tumor cell growth.
