During a 2-year study of bovine hepatic pathology detected during routine PM inspections at 10 abattoirs in County Cork, Irish Republic, 133 (4.65%) of 2861 livers examined had gross lesions; 35.3% of the lesions were bovine hepatic abscessation (BHA), 15% scarring (mainly resolving abscesses) and 28.6% fascioliasis. Only one liver (0.03%) had fascioliasis and abscessation. The author suggests that if fascioliasis was implicated in the aetiology of BHA there would be a statistically significant association between the presence of both pathologies in the same liver.
