The effect of vagotomy on recurrent retardation of pancreatic secretion

Bilateral supradiaphragmal truncal vagotomy was performed in dogs with fistulas. It was found that pancreatic secretion stimulated by intraduodenal administration of acidified hydrolysin decreased. The inhibitory effect of the administered pancreatic enzymes on their secretion by the pancreas disappeared to the 10-16th days of the postoperative period. During the following days, the recurrent inhibition of pancreatic secretion slowly recovered but even 1.5 months later, the inhibition was less pronounced than that in intact animals. It was concluded that there was central regulation of recurrent inhibition of pancreatic secretion by duodenal enzymes.
