Immunisation of ewes with an equine pituitary fraction produced an antiserum which, by immunodiffusion, formed at least 5 precipitin bands. Antibodies against both FSH and LH were detected in the antiserum by neutralisation assay in rats. Treatment of mares on days 3-7 of dioestrus resulted in a significant reduction in the weight of the corpus luteum and an increase in the diameter of the largest ovarian follicle. The results indicated that the pituitary gland of mares contains a substance which is necessary for maintenance of the corpus luteum during dioestrus.
